Writing Course Descriptions

Writing with IEW
Mrs. Linda Connelly
I am a mom to five children who are now adults, and I homeschooled for twenty-three years. For the past 15 years, I have taught IEW writing classes in a group setting. I have found, especially with my own children, that group writing classes can be more motivating. As always, I will meet with students once a week and teach the lesson in a fun and interactive way. Students will then write a rough draft of their assignment during the week. When students turn their assignment in, I will edit/correct and give detailed feedback and return it the following week. The students will then create a final draft of their assignment using the feedback I give them. I am available for questions by phone, Zoom, or email during the week. This method allows me to individually meet each student’s needs. Please email me with any questions about classes.

Beginning IEW (grades 3-5)
This class is the perfect foundation for reluctant or struggling writers as well as those who just need to increase their writing skills and are new to IEW. From the IEW website: Students will learn how to effectively use a wide range of structural models and stylistic techniques in their compositions, as they write on a variety of enjoyable fiction and non-fiction topics. They will learn to take notes, summarize references, write from pictures and much more.
** I rotate sources used, so students who need a 2nd year of Beginning IEW before moving to the next level will not be repeating assignments.

Level B IEW (grades 6-9)
This class will cover all IEW units with a variety of writing assignments including stories, essays, literary critiques, research papers, and more. Students will have grammar assignments as well as writing assignments each week. We will be reading, discussing, and writing about two literature books. This class meets the requirements for one high school English credit.
** There are 2 years of Level B so that students who continue in this level will not be repeating assignments; they will be refining their skills.

High School Writing: Windows to the World
Mrs. Christine DeVries
Literature is powerful. It has the ability to influence our thoughts and gives us a window into the author’s imagination and values. Join us in this adventure of reading, writing, and world views!
In class we will discuss the homework and literature, study and practice literary elements and organizational techniques, and do peer reviews. We may have time to watch a few films.
Students will need the Windows to the World: An Introduction to Literary Analysis student book. Homework will include reading, completing short assignments, and writing. Students are expected to complete each week’s assigned work and show it to a parent.

Recommended Grade Levels: 9-12 (strong readers and writers may be 7th or 8th grade)
